Why Independents?

More and more people in Redbridge are asking this question. For years, Labour has dominated the council, holding 54 out of 63 seats. But instead of delivering for residents, they have
overseen delay after delay, poor decision-making, and a worrying lack of transparency. The Conservatives offer no better alternative. They suffer from the same detachment and answer to
a Westminster elite that has become increasingly right-wing and out of touch with the realities of local life.
Major projects across Redbridge reveal the problem. The Broadmead Road Bridge in Woodford has been closed since July 2023 because of serious structural issues, causing traffic disruption
and ongoing safety concerns [1]. The lido in Valentines Park, promised for 2025, remains unfinished. The Redbridge Climbing Centre—once billed as a flagship facility—has been
postponed again and again [2][3]. These are not minor setbacks. They point to weak oversight, poor leadership, and a council that fails to prioritise the needs of its residents.
Education has also suffered. A joint Ofsted and Care Quality Commission report highlighted “widespread and/or systemic failings” in Redbridge’s services for children with Special
Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) [4]. Families continue to experience delays, inconsistent support, and poor communication. When residents try to hold the council to
account through Freedom of Information requests, they are often met with lengthy delays or evasive responses [5]. This breeds frustration and undermines public trust.
The council has also failed to take a principled stance on investment. Many residents have called for Redbridge to commit to divesting from companies complicit in genocide. Yet the
council has failed to commit, instead relying on legalistic arguments and technicalities to avoid action. This reluctance to confront moral responsibility has left many questioning whether
Labour councillors are willing to stand up for what is right.
Meanwhile, crime rates remain a major concern. Rising incidents of violent crime, burglary, and anti-social behaviour have left many residents feeling unsafe. The council’s pledges to tackle
the problem have not translated into meaningful results on the ground.
This is why Redbridge Independents are growing in strength. They offer something different: Honesty, Integrity, and Transformation. They are not bound by the instructions of
Westminster party machines but are rooted in the local community. Independent candidates are active in youth work, sports coaching, food banks, and campaigns for fairer education. Their
focus is practical, their leadership accountable, and their loyalty firmly to the residents they serve.
One example is Noor Jahan Begum. A long-time Redbridge resident, magistrate, and senior commissioner for public services in East London, she has spent years tackling poverty,
addressing inequality, and improving services for vulnerable families. Her loyalty lies with the people of Redbridge—not with any national party. She embodies what independent leadership
should look like: connected to the community, principled in values, and committed to meaningful change.
Residents are already responding. In the 2025 Mayfield by-election, Noor Jahan Begum of Redbridge Independents won with 1,080 votes, defeating Labour, Conservative,
Liberal Democrat, and Green candidates [6]. In the 2024 General Election, an independent candidate came second in Ilford South with nearly 10,000 votes—clear evidence of the appetite
for a different kind of politics.
Neighbouring boroughs also prove what is possible. In Tower Hamlets, the Aspire Party overturned long-term Labour control by prioritising resident engagement and practical
investment [7]. In Newham, Independents secured by-election victories in Plaistow South by focusing on accountability and responsiveness [8]. These examples show how grassroots
movements can successfully challenge the dominance of entrenched parties.
Local voices echo this call for change. Sarah from Ilford says: “The delays, lack of transparency, and the council’s avoidance of ethical responsibility are frustrating. We need leaders who are
accountable and truly care about our community.” Mark from Woodford adds: “The bridge closure has been a nightmare. It’s time for a change.”
Redbridge Independents represent that change. They stand for Honesty, Integrity, and Transformation. They are committed to acting responsibly, improving education for vulnerable
children, tackling crime, and making ethical financial decisions. After years of disappointment from both Labour and Conservatives, the choice is clear: it is time for leaders who live the
issues they promise to solve, not politicians who simply repeat empty words.
