Why Independents?

Redbridge residents are increasingly asking themselves this question. Frustration with the Labour-dominated council has been mounting for years, and it is clear that the status quo is failing the borough. With 54 of 63 council seats, Labour controls nearly all local decisions, yet repeated delays, poor decision-making, and a lack of transparency have undermined trust and progress. From infrastructure to education, residents are questioning whether the council is capable of effectively serving the community.

Critical projects in Redbridge have been repeatedly stalled. The Broadmead Road Bridge in Woodford has been closed since July 2023 due to structural defects, disrupting traffic and causing ongoing safety concerns [1]. The lido in Valentines Park, promised for 2024, remains unfinished, and the Redbridge Climbing Centre, intended to be one of the largest in southern England, has been repeatedly delayed [2][3]. These delays are not minor inconveniences—they reflect weak oversight, slow decision-making, and a council disconnected from residents’ priorities.

Education has been another area of failure. Redbridge’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) services were sharply criticized in a joint Ofsted and Care Quality Commission inspection, which identified “widespread and/or systemic failings” [4]. Families continue to report fragmented support, long delays, and poor communication. Attempts to hold the council to account through Freedom of Information requests are often met with long delays or obfuscation, highlighting a lack of transparency [5].

Residents are further frustrated by Redbridge Council’s reluctance to take a clear ethical stance. Despite growing calls, the council has refused to commit to divest from companies complicit in genocide, instead relying on legal technicalities and procedural loopholes to avoid making decisive, morally responsible decisions. Many feel this is an attempt to hide behind bureaucratic nuances rather than confront the ethical implications of its investments.

It is precisely because of these failures that Redbridge Independents are gaining traction. Independents are rooted in the community, committed to transparency, social justice, and responsive local leadership. Candidates are actively engaged in youth work, sports coaching, food banks, and campaigns for fair education—practical involvement that directly addresses residents’ needs. Unlike national parties, they put the borough first.

The appetite for independent voices is clear. In the 2025 Mayfield ward by-election, Noor Jahan Begum of Redbridge Independents won with 1,080 votes, defeating candidates from Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, and Greens [6]. In the 2024 General Election, independent candidates also performed strongly in Ilford South, winning nearly 10,000 votes—showing a broad desire for change.

The successes of independent parties in neighbouring boroughs illustrate what is possible. Tower Hamlets’ Aspire Party overturned long-term Labour control by focusing on engagement and practical investment [7], while Newham Independents won key by-elections in Plaistow South, emphasizing accountability and responsiveness [8]. These examples demonstrate that grassroots candidates can challenge entrenched party structures and deliver meaningful results.

Residents are speaking out. Sarah from Ilford says, “The delays, lack of transparency, and the council’s avoidance of ethical responsibility are frustrating. We need leaders who are accountable and truly care about our community.” Mark from Woodford adds, “The bridge closure has been a nightmare. It’s time for a change.”

Redbridge Independents represent that change. They offer local, accountable leadership, responsive to residents’ needs, transparent in their actions, and willing to confront moral and ethical issues head-on. In a borough where infrastructure is delayed, education fails vulnerable children, and financial decisions hide behind procedural loopholes, the choice is clear: it is time for leaders who live the issues they promise to solve, not just talk
